As more people relocate to the Island of the Gods, understanding the visa options for expats in Bali has become essential in 2025. Whether you’re planning to work remotely, retire, or invest in property, choosing the right visa is the first step to establishing a legal and comfortable lifestyle in Indonesia. The government continues to adapt policies to attract skilled foreigners and long-term residents, offering greater flexibility than ever before.

Social-Cultural Visa (Visa Sosial Budaya)

Ideal for those visiting friends, family, or immersing in Balinese culture, the Social-Cultural Visa allows a stay of up to 180 days with periodic extensions. While not designed for business or work, this visa is perfect for retirees, students, or visitors exploring long-term living options before committing to property or investment decisions.

Business Visa and Investor KITAS

The Business Visa (single or multiple-entry) is commonly used by professionals attending meetings, exploring business prospects, or managing property-related affairs. For investors who own shares in a local company or hold a significant role in a PMA (foreign-owned company), the Investor KITAS provides a renewable one-to-two-year stay with limited work rights. This route is increasingly popular among expat entrepreneurs and property developers.

Retirement Visa for Seniors

Expats aged 60 and older can apply for a Retirement KITAS, provided they meet financial and insurance requirements. This visa allows peaceful long-term residence in Bali without work obligations. Retirees often choose tranquil areas like Sanur or Ubud, where infrastructure supports aging in place, and the community is both welcoming and well-established.

The New Digital Nomad Visa and Second Home Visa

In 2025, the Indonesian government continues to promote its Second Home Visa, catering to high-income individuals who can show proof of funds or property ownership. Meanwhile, the anticipated Digital Nomad Visa allows remote workers to live in Bali tax-free for specific durations, depending on their income and employer location. These new visa types reflect Indonesia’s evolving stance on global mobility and lifestyle migration.
